MHA Language Project is committed to providing support for existing Mandan language teachers and encourages new teachers to join the tribal language revitalization effort. As part of this support, the MHA Tribal Education Department and NHSC Native American Studies Department is sponsoring a 3-week summer training institute and a mid-year intensive training session in cutting-edge second-language education methods, to be used with new textbooks and classroom materials.
The annual Mandan-Hidatsa-Arikara Summer Institute (MHASI) began in 2014. It is the premier Hidatsa, Mandan, and Arikara language teacher professional development event in the country. Courses offered include phonology and teaching methods courses for Level 1 and Level 2 textbooks in Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara. Course schedules can be customized to each MHASI participant and non-teachers are encouraged to attend and learn.
For the first time, in 2015 the Institute was held on the Fort Berthold reservation in North Dakota. Many teachers and language-learners gathered to learn about the MHA languages and about best-practice tools and teaching methodologies for languages of the Three Affiliated Tribes.
MHASI 2017 will take place July 10 – July 28 at NHSC
